Synopsis of THE SCALPEL

The Scalpel is the story of four people -- a pretty princess, a noble physician, an evil cardiac surgeon and a dreaded DON -- masquerading as a billionaire business tycoon. It is painted across a wide canvas filled with multiple hues: love, lust, lies, greed, deceit, jealousy, hate, vanity, honesty, purity, beauty, sublimity, scams, intrigues, violence, killings and scandals – while the four characters criss-cross continents touching cities of Delhi, Amritsar, New York, Chicago, Paris, Istanbul, Barcelona, Stanford and Sydney.

Nona Lal, a young princess from a former Himalayan state, Vice President of the elitist Paris based fashion house Divaa and the exclusive MB – Multi Billionaire Club, visits a premier hospital in Delhi when a colleague of hers suffers a massive heart attack while visiting India. She is intrigued by the hind-profile of a mysterious guest in hospital Director’s office, who stealthily walks out without saying even a cursory bye.

Unknown to her, the highly decorated hospital Director and the mysterious visitor had just finalized an audacious bail-out Cardiac Pacemaker Implantation plan for the most dreaded terrorist holed up in the Bora-Bora hills of far away Afghanistan. The Director conspires to send an expert team of Cardiologists along with the medical equipment including a State-of-the-Art Cardiac Catheterization Lab to Kabul ostensibly as humanitarian aid for that war-ravaged country.

The luxury of the Director’s life style and the opulence of his environs make Nona Lal as uncomfortable as does the presence and departure of the mysterious visitor in his office. There is something more there than meets the eye – her instincts tell her.

The Ziggurat shaped hospital Med-World, a 44 storey high sky-scrapper, built along the banks of river Yamuna in Delhi, is the center of an obnoxious trade where organ and tissues from live human beings are harvested one by one as per the commercial demand for conducting a clandestine transplantation programme for the wealthy patients from Europe, America and oil-rich Arab world. The ‘donors’ are kidnapped in hundreds from Indian towns and incarcerated in the ‘ware-house’ till their body parts are used one by one. Their remnants are disposed off in the hospital’s incinerators.

The Western wing of the Med-World hospital is at the complete disposal of Hassan Paasha, the Lord of Asia-Pacific underworld, who shares his power and fortunes with Rossanos in Chicago – the founding first family of American Mafia. Operatives of world’s major terrorist organizations: Al Qaeda, Hizbul Mujahdeen, LTTE, Japanese Red Brigade, IRA are provided safe haven in the five star luxury suites of the Western-Wing of the building, where they are flown in and out by Air-Ambulances landing and taking off from Hospital’s in-house Air-strips, overtly as part of the much hyped ‘Medical Tourism’ programme.

Rossanos set-up high-tech Mints in Muzaffarpur – a North Indian district as a joint venture with Hassan Pasha to print tons of Dollars and Euros per month, which are sent across the globe through Hassan Paasha’s business network.

Hassan Paasha is the other face of the billionaire business tycoon Rashid Khan -- Chairman RKGI—Rashid Khan Group of Industries owning widespread networks dealing in marble, steel, sugar, textiles and petrochemical industry. RKGI is the highest tax-paying conglomerate repeatedly awarded medals for ‘fair-trade practices’!

Hassan Paasha alias Rashid Khan has at least ten out of sixteen of Chief Ministers in Indian states as his direct appointees through whom he wields enormous political clout and financial power.

Dr. Bassra, a good doctor in the Med-World hospital discovers the medical scam in which patients’ normal Coronary Angiograms and other normal investigations are surreptitiously replaced by abnormal ones to bring them under the Surgeon’s Scalpel in the operation theatres for monetary and other ulterior motives. When the incumbent President of India becomes the victim of the scam, Dr. Bassra with the help of his friend – a former President of India, unearths the scandal by convincing the VVIP to undergo another Coronary Angiogram within few hours at another hospital, which as expected comes out to be normal.

Nona Lal, the princess and the fashion Guru, is infact the under-cover Agent JAK 47, an ILEA operative. ILEA – International Law Enforcing Agency – is the secret official cum unofficial organization set up by world’s major countries to wipe off crime and terror by physically eliminating the criminals and dreaded terrorists without going into the rigmarole of courts, trials, and legal battles. She follows the trail of the mysterious visitor and through a circuitous electronic route penetrates the fortress -- Med World - the headquarters of Hassan Paasha’s organization.

Finally in the last act the four roads meet when Nona Lal – Agent JAK 47, Dr. Tejwani - the Evil doctor, Dr. Bassra - the Good doctor and Hassan Pasha are inter-faced.

While battalions of Indian Armed Forces move in the Med-World Hospital and dozens of Ack - Ack guns explode the skies over President’s Palace at Raisina Hills in New Delhi, would one bullet from a Wasson and Smith draw the curtains for Hassan Pasha at his Mansion along Champs-de-Elisysess in the city of Paris?

Extracts from THE SCALPEL

1. He looked outside from the eastern window of his Paris mansion, the resplendent Champs-de-Elysees Avenue was glowing at is best from Eiffel Tower on one end to the Arch-de-Triumph on the other. Men, women, old, young, children were strolling with gay abandon, hand in hand, in pairs or groups, at leisurely pace

There was laughter, joy, gaiety all over. Giggles were rising in waves from the girlie-groups — savoring hot chocolates, cold ice-creams, tangy mustard-sauce hot-dogs or sipping steaming hot coffee from thick paper cups.

-*-

2. He glanced at his wrist watch – a Torsag Royale – the costliest in the world, a watch with 106 diamonds and platinum at those places where diamonds could not be moulded. He was woken up at 3 AM, by a call from President’s Palace in New Delhi. “You are under a direct threat Mr. Khan…. There is something very sinister….” The words were spoken torrentially, like a hail storm. They came from a man in tearing hurry, a man in panic, a man soaked in his own sweat. He could hear the panting and the palpitation the caller was experiencing. He wondered at caller’s willing spirit to take that risk, something which could jeopardize him for ever, put him behind bars for rest of his life. He smiled and threw his head back in bewilderment.

Life is an enigma he muttered. There are people who put their lives at stake to take mine…… and there are people who are willing to stake theirs to protect me. What a world! What a Life! He shook his head.

3. The dye was cast.

That was an epoch–making moment, a turning point. A turning point for the world around him, a moment, which would change the lives of many million men in the decades to come.

-*-

4. Hate is the most intense emotion. It is more intense than love. A man can hold back his love but no man can hold back his hate—whatever it may cost him.

-*-

5. Soma struck the weapon in Bodha’s abdomen and cut the body horizontally in two halves. Chest and abdomen were separated.

Ratna, cut away the arms and legs. It is easy to cut human body along the joints, where hard bones are connected to each other by soft thread-like tissues called tendons. The half dozen odd body parts were flung in the air at random. They fell feet apart.

6. Revenge is the sweetest of all human experiences, its sweetness stays forever.

'THE SCALPEL' - An Introduction

‘When a doctor writes a novel about the medical community cavorting with the mafia, would it be a work of fiction or would it be an attempt to showcase reality without the risk of backlash?’

‘THE SCALPEL' - Game Beneath is the first ever medical fiction in South Asia written by a senior Cardiologist with 30 years experience of working in premier hospitals.

A pretty Indian princess based in Paris, on a visit to India is intrigued by a mysterious character in a five-star hospital. His stealthy walk raises her suspicion. From thereon she trails him and exposes a criminal-terrorist-medical-mafia nexus. She finally comes face to face with the Prime Minister and the President of India.

The author takes the reader on a roller –coaster ride across Delhi, New York, London, Chicago, Sydney, Barcelona, and Istanbul. The narration is racy, language lyrical, violence chilling and romance subtle.

The author has filled the vacuum of thriller writing in India as was lamented by many in past. He has carried forward what Robin Cook started three decades back.

'THE SCALPEL' cuts across the veils of human greed, lust and lies. The pinnacle of the medical world is not necessarily adorned by the pious and the noble. The villains masquerade as angels and the angels face the risk of getting decimated.

If you are an avid book reader you shall see for yourself what a master-piece 'THE SCALPEL' is.

If you do not read books then you have to only read the first 4 pages. After that the story will take your over. You will not know how you reached the last page.
